•Alternate Browsers

Mozilla Firefox

Quickly catching up with Internet Explorer in terms of popularity, Firefox features a tabbed browser interface (open multiple pages in one window) and a multitude of software add-ons (known as Firefox extensions) that improve all aspects of a user's browsing experience.

Opera

Now absolutely free, Opera is another tabbed browser that has popup blocking, email and chat. Opera also provides browsers for mobile devices and consumer electronics.

Netscape

This Web browser has been around since the beginning. Back in the 90s, during the "Browser Wars" it was in even competition for the #1 browser spot with Microsoft (before Internet Explorer was included in Windows). It is still a fully-featured browser that provides integration with AIM, RealPlayer, WinAmp and Net2Phone.

Maxathon

Maxathon is a tabbed browser based on the Internet Explorer core. This means that you still have the web compatability of Internet Explorer, along with added features including low system resource usage, autoscrolling, form autofilling, mouse gestures and customizable skins. Recommended.

•Spyware Removal

Ad-Aware

With the ability to scan your RAM, Registry, hard drives, and external storage devices for known data-mining, advertising, and tracking components, Ad-Aware is easily the most usable spyware removal program.

HijackThis

HijackThis lists the contents of key areas of the hard drive and registry. Users can then manually sort through the list and identify potential threats. This program is not recommended for novice users, although it can save a log file which can then be given to an expert to analyze.

Windows Defender (beta)

This is Microsoft's entry into the anti-spyware campaign (that they in essence created). Still in the beta stage (not officially complete), it does a good job of removing most spyware and it also has a user-friendly interface.

•Antivirus (paid)

Norton AntiVirus

Probably the most recognizable name on the market, Norton is a good choice for antivirus solutions. Note: do not buy version 2006, find an earlier version instead.

McAfee VirusScan

Another well-known antivirus program, McAfee VirusScan offers much the same solutions that Norton does. McAfee is recommended if you can only find Norton 2006.

•Antivirus (free)

AntiVir

A free antivirus solution that features low system resource usage and fast scanning. The user interface isn't pretty, but it makes up in functionality what it lacks in presentation. Recommended.

Avast

Includes email scanning, p2p software protection and instant messenger protection. Even though it is free you will still need to register.

AVG

This is a competent antivirus program that has automatic updates and low system usage. Some users may have trouble navigating the user interface.

•Antivirus (online)

Trend Micro HouseCall

Scans your computer right from the internet. It detects both spyware and viruses.

Symantec Security Check

Tests your computer for online security threats and hacker vunerabilities in addition to scanning for viruses.
