•Spyware/Virus Detection and Removal

Spyware

Spyware is software that gathers information about a user without their knowledge. Its purpose is, as the name implies, to spy on you. Spyware is predominantly installed on a user's PC without their knowledge while surfing the web, although some spyware is unknowingly downloaded by the user as part of a freeware or shareware program. Not only does spyware spy on a user, it also takes valuable system resources that can, in some cases, slow the user's PC down to a near standstill.

Symptoms

  • Slow system performance
  • Unknown icons on the desktop or in the system tray (bottom right corner of your screen)
  • New internet toolbars
  • Random pop-up windows
  • Your default internet home page is changed

Viruses

Viruses are malicious bits of code that are transferred onto a user's PC and run without their knowledge. Viruses, like spyware, can be used to harvest information, but they more commonly directly inflict damage to a user's system, in rare cases deleting important system files. Unlike spyware, viruses never (purposely) come with any legitimate software downloads. Viruses are frequently distributed through email; many viruses mail themselves to all of the addresses in a user's address book. Other potential sources of viruses are instant messaging clients and pear-to-pear sharing programs.

Symptoms

  • Slow system performance
  • Your installed antivirus program won't start
  • Opening an email attachment results in sudden degradation of system performance
  • People that are in your email address book receive messages with attachments that you didn't send
  • Critical Windows errors
  • Windows spontaneously restarts
  • Documents or system files disappear

Process (for both)

  1. System configuration, installed programs and running services are analyzed
  2. Anti-spyware and antivirus programs are installed (this also helps prevent future infestation)
  3. All spyware and viruses are thoroughly removed
  4. In some cases of extreme infestation, Windows will need to be reinstalled

•Operating System Installation/Upgrades

Windows Vista is the latest Operating System (OS) from Microsoft. Users of older versions of Windows can upgrade to benefit from the added security and capabilities that Vista offers.

Benefits

  • Vastly improved security and protection
  • With supported programs installed, Vista offers a greater level of stability than any other Windows OS
  • A good looking, streamlined and user-friendly environment

Solutions

  • Upgrade (XP)
    • Windows XP users can upgrade to Vista
    • This is recommended to provide the highest protection from spyware and viruses
    • Due to Vista's high demand on system resources, a relatively new PC is required (2005 or newer) and may need to be upgraded as well
    • Windows Vista Upgrade purchase required (Home Basic, Home Premium, Business or Ultimate)
  • Upgrade (Me, 98 and 95)
    • Windows Me, 98 and 95 users can upgrade to Windows XP SP2
    • Older PCs can have their hardware upgraded to support Windows XP SP2
    • Windows XP purchase required
  • Reinstall (All)
    • Windows Vista, XP, Me, 98, and 95 users can have a fresh copy of their current Windows version reinstalled
    • This is recommended to solve unrecoverable system errors and every few years for optimal system performance
    • You will need to supply your own copy of Windows

Process for Operating Sytem Installations

  1. All data is backed up
  2. Hard drive is formatted
  3. Windows is installed
  4. User settings and documents are restored (if necessary)
  5. Supported user programs are installed (if necessary)

•Hardware/Memory Upgrades

The most effective way to improve PC performance is to upgrade the hardware. Adding memory is also a cost effective solution when compared to purchasing a new PC. Please note that the level of potential improvement is different for every PC.

Solutions

  • Add memory to boost overall system performance
  • Install a new processor to further boost overall system performance
  • Add a new hard drive to store more multimedia files (mp3s, videos) and backup data
  • Install a new video card to play the latest PC games and edit video files
  • Add a DVD burner to burn movies and backup data
  • Upgrade to a LCD monitor to save desk space
  • Add a wireless or wired network to connect multiple PCs and share Cable/DSL internet

•Software Troubleshooting

When not the result of spyware or viruses, software problems can be caused by outdated or incompatible drivers, corrupt files and programs that just don't get along. Users may also need help troubleshooting software that is known to be running correctly.

Solutions

  • System is analyzed for spyware, viruses and broken hardware
  • Install all windows updates and software patches for relevant software
  • Upgrade software to the most current version
  • Troubleshoot problems for known working software

•Wireless/Wired Network Setup

With a wireless network, laptop users can access the internet from anywhere in their home or business. Imagine sitting comfortably on your couch and surfing the internet at the same time! For users with multiple desktops, it is a great alternative to running wires between each PC.

Benefits

  • Security from internet threats and hackers
  • Share files and printers between PCs
  • Play networked PC games

Solutions

  • Add a network card in each PC without one
  • Add a wireless router to share internet access throughout your home or business
  • Add a wired router for stationary desktops

•Custom Built PCs

An alternative to buying a manufactured PC is to have one custom built to suit your needs. Each component can be chosen based on its importance to you. Whether you want a high powered gaming machine or you just want to be able to surf the internet and write documents, a PC can be custom built for you.

Benefits

  • Flexible range of performance and features
  • High potential for future upgrades and enhancements
  • No unnecessary software will come pre-installed on your PC

Solutions

  • Choose your preferred level of performance
  • Personalize case color, monitor type and color, keyboard, mouse, accessories and peripherals
  • Rates are project dependant

•Data Backup Solutions

Even the fastest and most powerful of computers will break down eventually. Although this will never happen to many users, there are numerous other threats to the integrity of your data. Planning a backup scheme now can prevent future disasters.

Benefits

  • Prevention of lost personal data
  • Portable transfer of data (depending on solution)

Solutions

  • Add a CD or DVD burner and backup data to discs
  • Add a new hard drive (internal or external) and synchronize data between drives
  • Add a removable media drive and backup to removable media
  • Add a Wireless or Wired Network and synchronize between PCs
